Because we can only do it together.
Education. Support. Appreciation. For every child in Zanzibar.
Who we are
Where cooperation creates education and the future grows
We are Schülerhilfe Sansibar e. V., a non-profit association dedicated to improving the educational and living conditions of children in Zanzibar. The association was founded in 2022 out of personal commitment. We are driven by the conviction that education is the key to long-term change.
Our work thrives on solidarity, teamwork and voluntary commitment. All members, including eight board members with two chairpersons, Helga Wiedecke (first chairperson) and Bianca Adam (second chairperson), work entirely on a voluntary basis. Every pound you donate or contribute as part of a sponsorship goes directly to our projects and to the children.
Today, we provide long-term support and partnership to two primary schools, St. Barnabas School in Mahonda and St. Monica School in Stone Town, as well as St. Paul School, a secondary school in Stone Town. Our work includes school sponsorships, education and food projects, and the construction, expansion and renovation of school buildings. We are particularly committed to creating inclusive learning spaces where all children – regardless of their individual circumstances – can learn, flourish and develop their talents in a safe environment.
Our goal is to open up real prospects for children through education, create safe and inclusive learning environments, and provide long-term support. We do not see ourselves as short-term helpers, but as permanent companions for the children, schools and local communities.
How we promote education in a sustainable way
01.
— Inclusive learning spaces
Inclusion is a central part of our approach: we work to create learning spaces in which all children – regardless of their individual circumstances – can participate. To this end, we work with schools to develop concepts that make education accessible to all.
02.
— Transparency and voluntary work
Our work is entirely voluntary. Every euro goes directly to the projects and the children. We attach great importance to making our approach transparent and keeping our supporters regularly informed about progress and developments.
03.
— Direct and long-term assistance
We focus on areas where children and schools need support most urgently and remain committed to them in the long term. Our approach is not a one-off project, but rather ongoing support: school sponsorships, education and food projects, and construction and renovation measures have a lasting impact because we visit the schools regularly and work closely with the local team.
04.
— Collaboration on equal terms
We develop our projects together with teachers, school administrators and local partners. This ensures that our assistance is needs-based, practical and effective. We make decisions in partnership, not from above, and tailor our measures to the actual needs of the children.
05.
— Holistic support
Our approach combines various areas to provide children with comprehensive support:
- School sponsorships ensure regular school attendance and the provision of materials.
- Food projects ensure that children are well fed.
- Educational projects promote creativity, English language skills and social skills.
- School construction and renovations create safe and inclusive learning spaces.
All of this together ensures that children not only learn, but also feel protected, valued and encouraged.
